Introduction

Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical and computer-based technique for solving a variety of practical engineering problems that arise in different fields namely structural analysis, fluid flow, heat transfer, vibrations, electrical and magnetic fields, etc. The finite element method provides infinite possibilities for engineering, and this course provides a detailed introduction of FEM and its applications in engineering and beyond. The Objective of this course is to introduce finite element method to scientists and engineers so that they are equipped to solve various problems of engineering, sciences and industries. This course shall contain lecture and lab sessions, which introduce basic equations of practical engineering problems, mathematical principles of FEM, implementation of FEM for variety of problems, formulation and implementation of non-linear FEM, Introduction and formulation of Isogeometric FEM, case studies and limitations of FEM, motivation for eXtended finite element method (XFEM), formulation and implementation of XFEM. The participants shall be able to implement FEM/ Isogeometric FEM / XFEM in various engineering applications. Examples are demonstrated with MATLAB and ANSYS. At the end of the course, the participants may be in a position to identify and select appropriate FEM methodologies for their specific conditions.


This course is of interest to those who works in the field of aeronautics, automotive, transport, mechanical, civil and nuclear industries, and is best suited to the teachers, researchers and R&D executives and will be very useful to any Industry who does FEA based numerical simulations using commercial software packages such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, LSDYNA, COMSOL. This course would provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to interact with one another and discuss problems and solutions of mutual interest. At the end of the course, the participants may be in a position to identify and select appropriate FEM methodologies for their specific conditions.
