Grid integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is one of the major concerns in the recent years as the penetration level of RES is increasing and also expected to increase in future, thanks to the preferable government policies as well as social & general awareness. Due to the complex interconnections and loading of the network with liberalization and environmental pressure, the power systems have to face many challenges in their optimal, secure and efficient operation. India has already taken the first step in the direction of grid integration of RES by unbundling the power system to bring competition with advent of new technological advances for more reliable, economical and efficient operation by Electricity Act 2003. Future power system structure, operation, control and management will be substantial different from the existing one as it will foresee large market players, more renewable energy sources and demand response programs. Communication networks are being integrated into the electric energy grid to create "smart grids". It provides remedial measures to power systems problems by computational intelligence, automation, advanced measurements, and information & communication technology (ICT).

Renewable energy in smart grid environment is basically the embedding of intelligence to enable bidirectional power flows with traditional sources of power generation and energy storage. Computational Intelligence (CI) deployment is essential in the smart grid to make it success. CI techniques are finding increasing scope and applications in almost every field of engineering. A system with embedded CI is often defined as an "intelligent" system, which has "learning," "self-organizing," or "self-adapting" capabilities. CI evolves computational models and tools of intelligence capable of handling large raw numerical sensory data directly, processing them by exploiting the representational parallelism and pipelining the problem, generating reliable and just-in-time responses, and having high fault tolerance. The Seminar on CI Applications to RES grid integration aims at bringing researchers and engineers from academia and industry together to present, interact and review the latest progresses in this emerging field, and to explore future research directions to address its challenges. The issues and technologies in this Seminar apply to related industries such as other utilities and petroleum.

The main objective of the Seminar is to enhance the knowledge of the participants in the area of the “Application of Computational Intelligence to problems of several dimensions related to renewable energy grid integration in the smart grid environment”. A unique, national level opportunity which delves into the high-level, strategic issues relating to the integration of renewable energy and examines practical strategies that energy generators, project developers and grid operators can implement to overcome obstacles posed by local planning schemes and regulations, and, importantly, how this can be done in a intelligent, cost-efficient and timely way. The seminar will provide a platform to an in-depth discussion on the various challenges and their possible remedies solved by application of CI techniques in RES initiatives which will benefit participants from academic and R&D institutions, engineers of utilities and policy makers.
