WHY STUDY AT IITMANDI
The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) is nestled in the Shivalik Range of the Himalayas, away from the bustle of the metropolis. It is situated, about 18 kms from the historic town of Mandi, in the Kamand Valley on the banks of the Uhl, a tributary of the river Beas. Since its inception in 2009, IIT Mandi has developed to commendable heights. In this very short span of time, it now has a fully residential campus with world-class academic and research facilities.
IIT Mandi’s Vision is To be a leader in science and technology education, knowledge creation and innovation, in an India marching towards a just, inclusive and sustainable society. Towards this Vision, IIT Mandi has several focus areas. A common theme is relevance to the local mountain region, and to India. To name some of the areas:
- 1. Advanced Materials Research Centre (AMRC): research on novel materials driven by the needs of electrical and electronics engineering. State-of-the-art instruments worth over Rs. 30 crores have been installed.
- 2. BioX: exploration of the intersections of life sciences and engineering driven by the needs for affordable health care, agricultural innovations, and care for the environment.
- 3. Energy: researchers across disciplines working on increasing energy supply in a sustainable manner
- 4. Centre for Design & Fabrication of Electronic Devices (C4DFED): research on materials and devices for microelectronics, with a strong focus on industrial relevance.
- 5. Entrepreneurship: the E-Cell fosters the spirit of entrepreneurship in students. The IIT Mandi Catalyst is an independent technology business incubator. The first startup by an IIT Mandi alumnus, IITians Tech, was launched on 1st August 2014.
Our unique curriculum sets us apart. An important aspect of the curriculum is the Design and Innovation Stream integrated into the learning process throughout the 4 years of BTech. Highlights of this stream are the 2nd year Design Practicum (DP) and the 3rd year Interdisciplinary Socio-Technical Practicum (ISTP). In the DP, student teams propose product ideas useful to society and build working prototypes of these products. The ISTP involves exploration of some of the impacts of new technologies on society, usually the village society surrounding IIT Mandi. Both Practicums culminate in an Open House for the public. The Design & Innovation Centre provides the necessary do-it-yourself ecosystem for students to hone the skills needed to provide technological solutions to the problems of society.
