A 7-day short term course on “Computer Aided Engineering: Applied FEM and CFD” was held at IIT Mandi from 18-24th January 2016. The course drew participants both from academia and industry. Participants were trained on wide range of modelling techniques in FEM and CFD along with the theoretical aspect behind the techniques.
Topics such as reverse engineering, extracting surfaces from scanned raw data, dynamic analysis of real world objects such as Sukhoi, Tejas, Mig21 airplanes, modelling the same problem with 1D, 2D and 3D elements in FEM, boundary layer theory using scale analysis etc were highly appreciated by the participants. CFD modelling techniques in internal and external flows, flow with obstruction, lift and drag predictions, how to interpret the results to make design changes etc. were covered. Dr R. N Chvatia , Dr. Harpreet Singh Nagi and Dr. Anjali Gupta bagged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively for demonstrating CAE skills in the course. However, all participants were equally quick in grasping CAE techniques in solving real world problems.
The Director, IIT Mandi, Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves distributed the prizes among the winners and interacted with the participants. He enlightened them with his talk on the present day relevance of CFD and FEM in industry.
