Composite materials have large scale commercial applications in marine applications, aerospace, automotive, boating, sporting goods, infrastructure, energy storage, biomedical etc. In the recent years, the development of new and improved composites manufacturing processes has caused unlimited product development opportunities. This course will cover the processing and product development knowledge related to composites. The subject of material processing will be dealt with in the frame work of processing composite materials. The course will discuss various techniques for design and manufacturing of the composite materials. The subject matter intends to cover polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites and ceramic matrix composites for various engineering applications.

The objective of the design perspective of the composite materials is to introduce finite element and mesh independent computational methods to scientists and engineers so that they are equipped to solve various problems related to design of composite materials. This course shall contain lecture and laboratory sessions, which introduce basic manufacturing techniques for composite materials, basic equations of practical engineering problems, mathematical principles of FEM, implementation of FEM for variety of problems related to composite materials.

This design perspective of the workshop will be of interest to those who works in the field of aeronautics, automotive, transport, mechanical, civil and nuclear industries, and is best suited to the teachers, researchers and R&D executives and will be very useful to any Industry who does FEA based numerical simulations using commercial software packages such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, LSDYNA, COMSOL. Participants will be able to extend the capabilities of ANSYS by use of ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). This course would provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to interact with one another and discuss problems and solutions of mutual interest. At the end of the course, the participants may be in a position to identify and select appropriate computational methodologies for their specific conditions. This workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to interact and discuss problems and solutions of mutual interest.
