For several decades, the development of intelligent machines that help humans in various tasks are growing at a very fast pace. A myriad of applications ranging from healthcare to autonomous vehicles are powered by recent developments in artificial intelligence, robotics and drone technology. To address the technological advancements and their potential, IIT Mandi established Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) at IIT Mandi with research focus on Robotics, AI, and Drone technology. Some of the actively explored topics include developing systems that complement and augment human capabilities, understanding and addressing the ethical, legal, and societal implications of this research, creating robust and trustworthy robotics and AI systems, supporting the development of related technical standards and tools, better understanding the national R&D workforce needs, and enabling long-term investments in these research areas. With a clear vision to create a sustainable and futuristic ecosystem of self-reliant innovation and entrepreneurship, CAIR at IIT Mandi developed state-of-the-art laboratories for AI, Robotics and Drones, and is actively working on several externally sponsored projects with support from government and industry.
IIT Mandi identified and developed one of its focuses on material research covering a wide range of cutting-edge research for applications in energy conversion, storage, environment, nanotechnology, additive manufacturing, biomaterials, smart electronic devices and displays, solar cells, magnetism, superconductors and neuromorphic computing. At IIT Mandi, the Advanced Materials Research Center (AMRC) was founded in 2013, to support and nurture the requirements of materials research by establishing a state-of-the-art experimental facility with a budget of ₹70 crores. The center is also in the process of expanding further with the support of ₹52 crores from the Ministry of Education through HEFA. For the last 12 years, the center has fostered many research ideas and played a very important role in catering research facilities not only to IIT Mandi but also to several research institutions and industries throughout the country. By bridging the disciplines of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering branches such as mechanical, materials, electrical and civil, the research on materials at IIT Mandi has flourished with 3500 publications, 57000 citations, 104 patents, 225 awarded PhDs, and ₹84 crores of sponsored projects.
The Center for Quantum Science and Technologies (CQST) at IIT Mandi is dedicated to advancing research in quantum computation, quantum optics, quantum communication, and quantum materials. Alongside this cutting-edge research, we are committed to training the next generation of Indian scientists in quantum technologies. One of our focuses is to develop a reliable and scalable optical quantum computing platform. To achieve these goals, we are in the process of developing a national laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a prototype construction facility for quantum computers and cryptographic devices. Currently, the center has five dedicated faculty members and ten affiliated faculty members from various schools.
The Centre for Design & Fabrication of Electronic Devices (C4DFED) at IIT Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, is emerging as a national pillar in India’s mission to become a global advanced semiconductor technology hub. The cutting-edge, multidisciplinary facility is engineered to fuel the aspirations of the nation for a self-reliant, technologically Viksit Bharat. C4DFED is equipped with world-class Class 100, 1000, and 10000 cleanroom laboratories, housing high-precision tools for Semicon industries and VLSI design. The center has made outstanding progress in indigenous semiconductor R&D, particularly in next-generation EUV resists technology, nanoscale CMOS technologies, biomedical microsystems, and smart sensors—core areas shaping the future of electronics, digital healthcare, and secure systems. C4DFED has integrated ecosystem bridges fundamental research with real-world applications, empowering trained manpower and industrial professionals with end-to-end exposure to design, fabrication, and testing workflows. The center is actively engaged in numerous nationally and internationally sponsored research projects, further reinforcing its position as a globally recognized innovation hub. This comprehensive, hands-on training cultivates a new cadre of semiconductor technologists equipped to lead the transition of the nation from chip consumers to chip innovators. By strategically aligning with India’s semiconductor mission, C4DFED is not just creating technology—it is architecting the deep-tech landscape of India’s future, transforming vision into silicon, and ambition into actionable innovation.
