Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)



1. What are the areas of research (PhD program) offered by the department?
Please see the following link for up to date list of areas offered in the current admission cycle. Page to be developed regarding Ph.D specilization areas.

2. When are admission for the Ph.D./MA Programme held?

Admissions to the Ph.D. Programme at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at IIT Mandi are held twice a year. Applications are usually invited in April and November each year and the selection process is completed in May and December. Intake in particular academic fields will be determined by the advertisement that is put out each time. Admission to UG course, MA may be open only in April.
Admission to the M.A Development studies starts in the month of April end and May starting every year.


3. How does one apply?
Applications for are to be made online at on the IIT Mandi website> Admissions> PG Admissions. Help regarding general procedures for completing the application and can be found here. Certain norms may differ for the SHSS.

4. What is the percentage marks required for admission to the Ph.D. Programme at the SHSS?

At least 60% (SC/ST 55%) marks on the aggregate in the MA degree or equivalent. There is a relaxation upto 55% for candidates from a Literature background.


5. What are the additional necessary qualifications for a Full Time Ph.D. Programme?

You need to have qualified the UGC/ NET or Junior Research Fellowship. This will entitle the student to a fellowship and the student would be assigned as a Teaching Assistant for the SHSS faculty. There is no provision for a self-financed Full Time PhD registration at IIT Mandi.


6. What are the additional necessary qualifications for a Part Time Ph.D. Programme?

You need to have a minimum of two yeas of work experience and would be required to submit a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the employer at the time of admissions. Details of the NoC can be found in the prospectus. Please visit (Click Here) for details


7. I have two years work experience but not with the same employer. Do I qualify for the Part Time Ph.D. Programme?

Yes, but you would need to produce an NoC from your current employer. Something more norms should be added.


8. Do I have to produce No Objection Certificate from my employer at the time of the interview?

Yes. In case of difficulty do consult the SHSS office.


9. Am I allowed to continuing working while being enrolled as a Part Time student?

You can continue to work. But you would need to attend lectures which may be scheduled during working hours. Something more norms should be added.


10. How can I be sure that a particular faculty member at the SHSS would be interested in supervising my Ph.D. Project?

Do look up the faculty research interests on the SHSS Department web space. You are welcome to get in touch with a particular faculty member in advance.

11. I am unable to reach IIT Mandi on the scheduled day of the interview. Can the interview be rescheduled?

Usually interviews are held on one or two days. Beyond this the interview cannot be postponed. Ph. D admissions are conducted every semester, so perhaps you can reapply next semester.


12. Would accommodation be available for those traveling to Mandi for the interview?

13. What are the documents that I need to carry with me during the interview?

At the time of interview, the shortlisted candidates are to bring the original as well as photocopies of the following documents, along with two passport size photographs:
a. One Passport size photograph
b. Copy of interview call letter
c. Updated Resume
d. Degree certificate(s) 10th/SSC/SSLC onwards
e. Qualifying certificate for NET/JRF (or equivalent examination)
f. Caste certificate for SC/ST/OBC candidates
g. NOC and experience certificate (For part time candidates only)
h. Latest OBC certificate valid upto next 6 months of issued.
